Designing multiple WeWork locations in New York City and Washington DC was an exciting and dynamic opportunity focused on creating spaces that foster collaboration, innovation, and community. WeWork’s core mission of providing flexible, shared workspaces for entrepreneurs, startups, freelancers, and businesses of all sizes became the foundation for our creative process. The challenge was to design environments that would not only support these diverse communities but also encourage interaction and the exchange of ideas.

The creative journey began by understanding WeWork’s unique culture—one that thrives on openness, creativity, and a sense of belonging. With this in mind, we focused on creating transparent, flexible spaces that would facilitate connection. Glass-front offices and bench-style desking were incorporated throughout the design to promote a sense of openness and accessibility. This allowed for an environment where people could work individually but remain connected to the larger community.

To further enhance collaboration, we strategically placed a variety of communal spaces across each location. Soft seating lounges, game rooms, coffee bars, pantries, and even beer carts were designed to encourage informal interactions and create a vibrant atmosphere. The goal was to make every corner of the space a potential meeting spot for sharing ideas and building relationships.

The design also embraced simplicity and versatility, with neutral finishes and furniture that provided a blank canvas for each occupant to personalize their work area. Private workspaces were thoughtfully offset by eclectic and playful community areas, featuring bold mood lighting, bright pops of color, and distressed wood flooring. These elements not only created a sense of fun but also gave the space character, inviting people to feel comfortable and inspired in their surroundings.

Ultimately, the design of WeWork’s locations reflects a balance between individual productivity and collective energy. By combining functional workspaces with vibrant community areas, we created environments that fostered creativity, interaction, and growth, all while staying true to WeWork’s mission of building collaborative, dynamic communities.
